Shireland Students Return from Dubai with New Skills, Confidence and Ambition

Sixth Form students at ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ returned from an inspiring 10-day international work placement in Dubai, an experience that has not only left them with unforgettable memories but also a renewed sense of ambition and a clearer vision for their futures after post-16 education.Ìý

This landmark trip provided students with the rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s most innovative cities, not merely as visitors but as young professionals. From day one, students were placed in real-world work environments across industries including travel and tourism, business, digital design, and technology. Sectors that mirror the global economy and align with the diverse interests of Shireland’s students.Ìý

The programme was funded through the UK Government’s highly competitive Turing Scheme, with the Academy being one of the select few schools in the West Midlands to secure the grant. The £83,742 award covered travel, accommodation and placement support, ensuring that cost was not a barrier to participation.Ìý

Thomas Daly, Principal at ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ, commented: “At Shireland, we are committed to providing our students with the experiences and skills they need to lead happy, successful and fulfilling lives beyond Sixth Form. Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping young people broaden their horizons, discover new cultures and gain real-world insight into professional life.Ìý

“This trip wasn’t just about travelling abroad, it was about showing our students the vast possibilities open to them and helping them build the confidence to pursue their goals, wherever they may lead. Whether they go on to university, apprenticeships or employment, they now do so with greater self-belief, a clearer sense of direction, and the knowledge that their potential is limitless. We are incredibly proud of how they embraced every challenge and grew from the experience.â€Ìý

Each student was matched with a work placement aligned with their personal interests and career goals, ensuring they gained hands-on experience in a field they are passionate about. Many students have since leveraged their time in Dubai to enhance their university applications, refine their personal statements and develop clearer career pathways.Ìý

One student reflected on the experience, saying: “The advice that I would give to students who may be considering the same opportunity would be to take on the work experience and take advantage of it because it allows you to build your confidence and also adjust to different working environments.â€Ìý

Beyond their professional development, students also immersed themselves in Dubai’s rich culture and heritage, visiting some of the city’s iconic landmarks.Ìý

Another student shared: “What I enjoyed most about Dubai was learning about the culture, working with local people on placement and sightseeing – for example, going to the desert.â€Ìý

This trip perfectly embodies ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ’s values of providing opportunities that empower every student to dream big and confidently step into the future. The Academy’s commitment to promoting social mobility and removing barriers to success was central to this initiative, with additional support provided through the Turing Scheme for students from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds.Ìý

As the Academy reflects on the impact of the Dubai placement, it aims to build on this success and explore further international opportunities that will continue to inspire and empower the next generation of students at Shireland. The success of this programme sets a powerful precedent, demonstrating what’s possible when young people are given the chance to learn, lead, and grow on a global scale.Ìý
